AI or Human do we need to choose?

You may compare AI and Humans, wanting to know which one is better. AI can do many things, and sometimes better and faster than humans. But do you think this is closing the debate here?

Fear of progress

As you know every disruptive change makes us go through different phases before we adopt it. It was the same thing when internet came out. But this time, this is special.

In the modern days, we have used our intellectual capacity as a criterion to differentiate Humans from Animals. AI is scaring you, and me not only due to the disruption it brings. But because it gives the impression that a machine can compete with us. What is more normal than worrying, when we start feeling competition breathing down our neck? But is it really competing with us?

Currently, AI is a tool working under certain conditions. Those conditions still make you the boss. AI needs many things to work.

Human process VS AI process

You and I are processing requests very differently from AI. For example, if you want to draw something you will take a model trying to get inspired. Based on your knowledge, your experience, training, good common sense, and what you’ve seen recently, you will create a drawing. If you make a mistake you may adapt the drawing to the new situation. The AI will not make mistakes, it will do what you want within the limitations of its training, and depending on the quality of your input.

The AI is currently executing most of the time unless you just let it free. The AI does not commit mistakes. It eventually has bugs, or misunderstands the direction you gave because the terms you have used were subject to interpretation. As long as you tell it what you need (trained AI + input = output) it will do it for you. With the AI you are the real creator in charge because you are feeding it what you want.

Priorisation of values

Are AI creations better than yours? AI will help you to make it faster and prettier eventually. But things we like depend a lot on how much we value them. Let's say that you value the fact that an artist has spent years learning a drawing style, and technique. You will certainly value more a painting this artist has spent hundreds of hours more than a drawing made by a student with an AI that looks the same.

Made by AI or made by you, both will be great. Now more than ever this is more about what your client values and what it needs. If your client values more the effort, the time, the skills, and the imperfections, that come with human-made products then you will know that it has to be fully human-made. If this is about speed, and efficiency just use the machine. Or maybe you are like me and you love to do both.

The best way to feel better about AI is to try it, to understand it's possibilities.
